Right to Free Legal Aid

Eligible people can get free lawyers and legal services through legal services authorities.

🗣️ What this means for you

If you cannot afford a lawyer, or if you belong to an eligible group such as women, children, SC/ST persons, industrial workmen, persons in custody, persons with disabilities, or low-income groups, you can apply for free legal aid through DLSA, SLSA, High Court Legal Services Committee, or NALSA.

Step-by-Step Action Plan

1

Contact the District Legal Services Authority at your district court.

2

Submit an application describing your case and eligibility.

3

Attach income certificate or category proof if required.

4

Ask for appointment of a panel lawyer or legal advice clinic support.

5

Escalate to SLSA or NALSA if your application is ignored.

⚖️ The Relevant Law

Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (1987)

Section 12 and Article 39A of the Constitution

"Legal services shall be provided to eligible persons so that opportunities for securing justice are not denied by reason of economic or other disabilities."

⚠️ Punishment / Penalty

This is a service entitlement. If wrongly denied, you can escalate to the State Legal Services Authority or NALSA.
