Right to Information from Public Authorities
Citizens can request records and information from government departments under the RTI Act.
🗣️ What this means for you
You can ask a government office for records, orders, file status, inspection reports, spending details, and other information held by that public authority. The office must usually reply within 30 days. You do not need to explain why you need the information.
Step-by-Step Action Plan
Identify the correct public authority and Public Information Officer.
Write a clear RTI application asking for specific records or information.
Pay the prescribed fee unless you are exempt as a BPL applicant.
Keep proof of submission, such as postal receipt or online acknowledgement.
File a first appeal if no reply is received within 30 days or the reply is incomplete.
⚖️ The Relevant Law
